Top Heavy Management

TOO MANY CHIEFS AND NO INDIANS!

Healthcare, like MOST, organizations had added and continue to add more people to the top of the organization and not enough WORKERS. This true in industry, the military, education and almost all others. This not only increases costs, but it added to complexity and inefficiencies.

I look at GE where I worked for almost 30 years, where there will ONLY 119 Vice-Presidents when I left in 1984 and today there are tens of thousands. I look at the Military where I spent over 8 years and the number of GENERALS, ADMIRALS, etc are astonishing.

I think this is a function three things:

1. is the need for status to attract and retain good people and

2. that titles may be a way to not pay more.

3. the number of reorganizations, mergers and partnerships.

But what ever the reason it is costly, adds to conflicts and complexity.

I believe all organizations can eliminate at least two levels of management and this would improve communications, increase interactions and reduce cost and complexity.
