Increasing Shortage of the Right Talent and Skills
Everyone says that there willl be a continuing shortage of healthcare professionals, especially family doctors, nurses and some specialties. BUT nothing is being done to alleviate this shortage.
- Medical schools are not expanding their enrollment and there is no effort to change some of the requirements.
- Each State does its own certification and licensing so a doctor or nurse licensed in one state may not be able to practice in another since they have not tried or it is too complex and even costly to do so.
I believe that there should be more cross licensing and permitting individuals with more limited education or experience to provide SOME services. This is being done with the increasing number of Nurse Practitioners. But is still a slow process.
Another part of this issue is the cost of going to Med school, service internships, residency and passing special Boards adds to the inability to respond faster to this continuing and complex issue.
